Our Favorite RV Shower Head Replacements

Camping with your own shower is one of the best parts about RVing. But the bathroom fixtures that come with RVs are not. Thankfully, RV shower head replacements make it fast and affordable to have a better bathing experience. These six RV shower head reviews explain what you need to know to get started.

Why Upgrade Your RV Shower Fixtures?

Today’s RVs are big and beautiful machines. But the shower heads installed in RV bathrooms seem to be a secondary thought to most affordable camper manufacturers. Built with cheap, plastic parts, factory-default RV shower heads deliver a less than optimal experience when you need to clean off.

We splurged on a top rated RV shower head and hose when we bought our second fifth wheel. The original one that came with the trailer cracked during one boondocking adventure. We couldn’t shower without water spraying everywhere. To conserve precious fresh water in the holding tank, we suffered for days without a proper cleanse. As soon as we made it back to an RV campground with hookups, we started researching the best RV shower heads on the market. Here’s what we discovered about this DIY RV bathroom upgrade.

Three things to know about RV shower head replacements

DIY RV shower experience
You’ll wonder why you waited so long for this easy RV upgrade.

This DIY RV project is much easier than most. And it’s cheaper than upgrading your RV sofa bed!

All RV shower head replacements come with installation instructions. It’s a simple DIY RV job anyone can do with minimal tools. Just pay attention to the lessons we learned when we did this mod:

  1. Purchase the RV shower head and a new hose at the same time. Don’t try to save money by only purchasing a shower head. Even if you have a perfectly fine hose, if it’s more than a year or two old it probably won’t match the new shower head. Be coordinated. Get rid of it.
  2. Buy the longest RV shower hose you can get. If your chosen RV shower head manufacturer offers multiple hose sizes, buy the longest one. You never know what you’ll need to clean in your RV shower.
  3. Caulk and cover any shower wall holes. When we installed our new RV shower head, we had to move the hose and head to a higher spot in our shower stall. Have silicone caulk ready to patch up any spots where the old hardware was installed.

Here’s the Best RV Shower Head and Hoses for Any Budget

These RV shower head reviews show you don’t need to buy the most expensive fixture to enjoy a good shower. If you don’t live full-time in an RV, a budget-friendly shower head and hose replacement is just fine. But if you are a permanent full-time RVer the way I am, consider the best RV shower head replacement you can afford. That way, you won’t need to repeat this job for several years.

I bought a Oxygenics shower head. I’m very disappointed with it. I’m hooked up to a city water and the pressure isn’t any better. I bought the top of the line model. I would not recommend.

SANDIE BOCK - April 9, 2022

WHY can’t I just buy a shower head at the HD or Lowes and put a shut off valve on it and be done? WHY a special RV shower head. I like a powerful shower, I pull the water-saver part inside out of the head out to give the power of the water to me. Is it the wrong size to screw onto the hose in the shower or ?

    Drew - April 14, 2022

Yes Sandie- the home stores carry HOME-type shower heads because they are designed to work with more consistently higher pressures, and they have the hardware that matches standard residential plumbing.- So there you have it- the ones for rv’s are designed to give a decent shower at lower water pressures, and the Oxygenics models are usually better at that job than the rest.

    Henry - April 14, 2022

I learned early on that I got the best showers out of heads with fewer “pinholes” because of the lower pressure and flow in an RV. When there are lots of pinholes, the water just dribbles out; when there are fewer, it sprays with some vigor. Home-store shower heads are too large and lush to work well. I eventually got myself an Oxygenics because of all the buzz about it on the forum sites, and I’m not dissatisfied with it by any means, but it just doesn’t seem obviously superior compared to the conventional head I had settled on previously. It does sit higher in the bracket, which I like as a tall person, but for the same reason tumbles out more easily on the road unless I dismount it and let it hang from the hose when I pack up the trailer to move.

      Rene Agredano - April 15, 2022

Henry, what a cool observation, thank you for sharing. I did notice that my own Oxygenics has small pinholes too. What was the conventional brand you had before you tried it? Oh and yes we always have to dismount the shower head from the wall before we roll on down the road.

Henry - April 15, 2022

My 2019 Cougar came stock with an unbranded chromed-plastic wand with a 2.5GPM limiter and 40 orifices (pinholes). When pointed upward, the water barely bubbled over the head surface — totally useless for a personal “undercarriage wash.”

I replaced it with a “Nature Mist” head I had saved from another fixture, with the same limiter, but only 20 orifices. I got a 4″ rise out of that one, and its “pulsator” setting cut that down to three central ones, giving me three feet of rise, perfectly adequate for a personal wash where needed.

I had to add a third-party shutoff button on the hose, but we used it for a year before finding the Oxygenics model I wanted (Bodyspa Adventure). It works about as well as the second wand, though I can’t say one way or the other about overall reductions in water use.

I find the “dribble shutoff” on it annoying, as there is negligible elbow room in the shower, so it’s always dribbling ON me. It must be “code” or something, because they all come with those now, instead of the true shutoffs we had 20 years ago.

One caution I would give to those who try to alter the flow restrictors: a lot of times, what looks like a flow restrictor in the hose connector is an anti-siphon valve. If you drill or remove it, your water may just gush out of the housing at the valve output. Increasing flow is intuitive, but eats up your fresh tank faster; you can get the same user experience by reducing head orifices or going Oxygenics.
