Motorhomes and travel trailers have been fixtures on tailgating lots across the country for decades, providing respite from the broiling sun and sizzling blacktop and giving sports fans a place to store and cook their game day feasts.
Some local RV companies have started taking the game day party tradition to a new level.
After one tailgate at Notre Dame University in fall 2013, Scott Tuttle began thinking about how an RV could be redesigned for a better tailgating experience.
“We thought we could design a really cool tailgate-type product based on products we were already building at the time,” said Tuttle, president of Livin’ Lite RV, a subsidiary of Thor Industries.
About a month later, the company finished its first Game Day Trailer — a 24-foot towable trailer with two fold-down bars, massive flat-screen televisions, men’s and women’s restrooms, a four-door refrigerator and freezer, a kitchenette and a grill.
“I don’t know that I’ve met anyone that’s seen it and didn’t think it was one of coolest things they’ve ever seen,” Tuttle said
The product went on the market in 2014 and Tuttle estimates the company has made about two dozen of them.
