Dating back to the late 19th century, the NFS continues as a Department of the Interior with a singular mission and motto:

“To sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.”

“Caring for the land and serving people.”

Managing 154 national forest and 20 national grasslands, the NFS is responsible for 25% of all federal lands.  Its 193 million acres, play host to 860 million visits per year utilizing
