Review: Yogi in the Smokies, Cherokee, N.C.

Just a short drive from the entrance to the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, Yogi in the Smokies sits on the side of a windy mountain road with the RavenFork River at its front door.

It was our family’s first time camping in the mountains and this taste mountain life, left us with an insatiable appetite for scenic views and wooded backdrops.

On this particular trip, we booked one of their family cabins for eight nights of relaxation, trying our hardest to unplug and unwind. Our cabin was clean, spacious, and contained all the pots, and utensils we needed to cook meals during our stay.

The staff was friendly from the very start, beginning with our phone reservation and the employee who waited for us to arrive, even though it was after closing time, which we really appreciated.

Each morning they welcomed me to the front office with a warm cup of coffee, big smiles and chit chat about the local area, the tribal lands and nearby attractions like Mingo Falls, which can either be reached through a rugged trail inside the campground or by driving just 3-5 minutes down the road.

We stayed during what is considered to be their pre-season, and to be honest, it couldn’t have worked out any better for us. The campground was quiet and peaceful, as the summer activities and family fun had not yet begun, which gave us the chance to take in the beautiful surroundings and get into nature.

We enjoyed family campfires, walking by the river to watch the fishermen, and a nice park just down the mountain, where the kids enjoyed feeding the geese and I could sneak in some emails!
