One of the biggest and most liberating changes in the 7 years that my wife, daughter, and I have been full-timing is to go solar in our RV. This was not without hesitation, followed by many mistakes before getting it to work for our “Real World” Boondocking RV lifestyle.
As many do I turned to the best looking add-on “RV only” equipment at first, but fast found out they did not work and I would be throwing money down the drain.
I did find that you have 4 basic parts to a solar power system…
- Reception (sun power to the solar panels)
- Transmission (power from the panels to the battery bank)
- Storage (battery banks)
- Usage (12 volts battery to house power & 12 volt DC to 120 volt AC inverter loads)
If any of these 4 is not sized and installed properly your system will not be at its full potential.
