PEORIA, Ill. — With woodlands, river valleys and a burgeoning community of outdoor enthusiasts, Peoria and its surrounding communities contain a multitude of options for the prospective hiker or cyclist, List.com reported. From the celebrated paths that have received significant upgrades to the more nature-filled landscapes outside the city limits, here are a few options to explore in hiking boots or by the seat of a bike this summer.
1. Rock Island Trail
The elongated jewel of central Illinois trails, the Rock Island Trail stretches 37.6 miles from downtown Peoria to the Stark County town of Toulon, List.com reported. Scenic views vary from the urban landscapes of Peoria to the tranquil farmland and woodland in the northern portions of the trail, with multiple access points to suit any central Illinois resident. The 13-mile southern part of the trail was recently revamped by the Peoria Park District, featuring new pavement and the Knoxville Avenue bridge.
