Christmas comes early in Yellowstone. No, I’m not referring to the weather. It isn’t getting that cold at night yet fortunately, I’m referring to the annual Aug. 25 Christmas celebration that most of the lodges and stores participate in in the park.

There is a story behind it, it’s not entirely a marketing gimmick. The legend goes that back in the early days of Yellowstone, a freak snowstorm on Aug. 25 stranded a bunch of visitors inside the park. A tree was cut down and hauled inside and decorated as if for Christmas to keep people occupied until the roads cleared.
