Desert Dispatch: Many beautiful places await north of Bishop on US 395

From the writers at Desert Dispatch

Camping at Bishop and beyond headed north on U.S. Highway 395, there are dozens of interesting side trips or stops you may want to consider. Bishop is the largest city within the Owens Valley. This is a good place to stock up on supplies when headed north.

When you head out of Bishop, there is a fairly good climb as you rapidly gain altitude. The sparse pines soon become a beautiful forest. Temperatures decreasing with each 1,000 foot ascent, the smell of the forest and the clean mountain air are in concert with the scenery.

The Mammoth and June Lake areas offer great camping or even a side trip for a day of fishing or hiking. Mono Lake has a rich history and is a major environmental area for migrating birds.
