Chicago Now: A garden railroad, an RV park, and a love story

This past weekend, I spent time in an RV park in Rockford, Ill. As I was walking my dog after dark one night, I felt a shimmering sensation radiating from the corner of the park.

One of the lots was twinkling and … humming?  When I realized what it was, I ran to get my son. I found him alone in a field practicing his Jedi moves with a light saber.

“Come quick, G. You have to see this.”

I had never heard of a garden railroad but apparently it’s a thing, and it is just what it sounds like – model railroads that are landscaped into a garden.

Maribeth downplays this Rockford marvel that she and her husband of forty-three years have created. “This is small potatoes in the world of railroad gardens,” she said. By that definition, then, “small potatoes” are garden railroads grown one summer after the next over the span of a decade, with still more work to be done…
