Summary:

Families will find Beaver Creek Campground to be an affordable respite when visiting the tourist attractions around Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse memorial. Located outside the town of Custer, S.D., the campground is less than 30 minutes from both attractions, and very close to the super scenic Custer State Park.

Kids of all ages will enjoy the winding waterslide that dumps them into a refreshing pool. Adults will enjoy a separate pool. Wristbands are required at a cost of $7 per day or $5 after 4 p.m. Other amenities include horseshoes, volleyball and FREE bikes to use.

The park offers large, wooded campsites as well as cabins and even a few tipis for rent. Those who prefer camping in open spaces won't be disappointed either.

The campground specializes in serving family reunions and small groups, and offers a moderate size lodge for private functions.

Beaver Lake does have free wireless, although its consistency is spotty. We conducted three tests and two of them timed out before completion. The one test that worked was 3.27 mps download and 0.28 mps upload. A hotspot near the office offers better connections, and an air conditioned room offers ethernet wired connections. Cell phone service is equally spotty, often reaching one or two bars. Verizon's MiFi device tested at 1.98 mbs download and 0.81 mbs upload.

The campground is a short distance from Custer, which offers ample dining selections and a grocery store. Rapid City is the closest big city, and it's about an hour away.

While campgrounds closer to the main monument attractions can cost well over $100 per night, family-operated Beaver Lake Campground is a wonderful alternative.
