I’ve long had the dream of hopping into our family’s RV and touring the country’s beautiful national parks. It stems from my deep love of my local state parks.
In those parks we hike and learn. The kids surf and marvel at wildlife. We’ve spent more than 100 nights camping in state parks. That’s right – we packed up and left our house, traveled seven miles down the road, and set up camp just so we could spend more time there.
To say we are in love with these state parks is an understatement. That’s why I’m thrilled about the Every Kid in a Park initiative signed by President Obama last week.
Every child in the fourth grade next year will get a one-year pass to federal parks and waters for them and their families. That’s a year of deep breathing and more colors in nature than the paint section of Home Depot. I’m excited about that!
There will be lessons in history, nature, and physical fitness. Families will spend time taking in what’s around them, rather than what’s on their personal devices. I know this because I live it.
